Tripods and their heads

Many texts I have read on landscape photography put a decent tripod very high on the list of priorities to start taking better pictures.

A few months ago I finally gave into the temptation to buy a used tripod – the Manfrotto 55 ProB. It seems stable enough for what I have to mount on it and tall enough to use without getting backache. My new legs were as good as new and there was only one small part missing.

Choosing a tripod head

I still needed a tripod head and soon discovered that buying the legs was the easy part. Choosing a tripod head is a fantastically obscure science and my learning curve started at my local camera store. They gave me a couple of heads to play with, all of them by Manfrotto and Gitzo and I did indeed find one that “felt” good, but it wouldn’t agree with my bank account.
